Heading South to sunflowers

We set off just after the rain finished and headed South on small roads to the lovely old town of Vitré with its half timbered houses and stopped for coffee in a tabac.
I was desperate for something to eat and found some Far Breton ( a custardy thing with plums in it) in a boulangerie while Tom and Helen had galettes from a stall. Just as well we did because later it turned out that it had been our lunch.
Outside the tabac I was approached by a guy who informed me that he had been in Le Tour at the time of Laurent Fignon. He thought Froome was clean but he was not so sure about Valverde.
Leaving Vitré Tom took the lead in navigating and so we ended up on the road back to Fougères. Some time later we got onto the right road and wound our way eventually to Craon.
We passed gorgeous little villages each  with its own Mairie and we assumed everyone was on holiday still because every village was dead (hence the lack of lunch).
At the fantastic B&B Madame gloomily confirmed that everyone either commutes or has moved to the big towns to work.
We had rooms in the old carriage house and we had the evening meal shared with a French couple. Very civilised and our conversational French improved with the wine.

  1. I love how you always come across kindred spirits on these trips - good news about Froome, from the horse's mouth! I was thinking everyone was siesta-ing but that's a pity about the commuting, it looks such picturesque countryside. Interesting style in the dining room there!
